Khelo India University Games 2021: Venues, dates, and everything you need to know

It may be a year later than planned, but India’s largest university sporting carnival is finally ready to kick off across four different venues in Bengaluru.

The much-awaited KIUG ’21 is almost upon us and we can look ahead to a two weeks of sporting extravaganza.

Over 4,500 athletes under the age of 26 from around 200 universities representing 20 sports will do battle in the 2nd edition of the Khelo India University Games that are set to be held from April 24 to May 3 across four venues in Bengaluru.

With the tournament now approaching, The Sports School gives you all the information you need.

 

WHAT IS KIUG?

Khelo India University Games launched in 2020 with the objective to identify and train athletes in the age group of 18 to 25 years to compete in the international events like Asian Games and Olympics.

 

WHEN IS KIUG’21?

The 10-day competition gets underway on April 24 and the action is unrelenting until May 3.

WHERE IS IT?

There is no single venue here. Instead, KIUG’21 will take place in four different venues.

The flagship university-level event is set to be organized at the Jain University Complex, The Sports School, Sri Kanteerava Stadium (Indoor & Outdoor), Field Mashal KM Carippa Hockey Stadium, and SAI Shooting Range in Bengaluru.

Almost all the sports are scheduled to take place inside The Sports School and Jain University complex in Bengaluru. Other events such as athletics, Hockey, and shooting will be held at Sri Kanteerava Stadium (Indoor & Outdoor), Field Mashal KM Carippa Hockey Stadium, and SAI Shooting Range respectively.

 

WHAT NEW SPORTS DISCIPLINES ARE INCLUDED?

 

 

In a bid to preserve and promote the century-old sporting disciplines of the country, Yogasana and Mallakhamb have been added to the roster for this edition.

Other major sports disciplines are Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Fencing, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Rugby, Shooting, Swimming, Volleyball, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.

 

WHO IS THE MASCOT?

The mascot of Khelo India University Games 2021 is also an elephant, named Veera.

 

WHAT IS THE LOGO?

The logo features the iconic Vidhana Soudha building – the Legislative House in Bengaluru – with two elephants on either side.

HOW TO REGISTER?

If you want to register for the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) then visit the official website and register, here are the steps:

  1. Visit the official Website of the Khelo India University Games.
  2. Click on the appropriate category from the Athlete, Coach, Academy, Volunteer Registration, Technical Official, Manager, Stakeholder Portal, and GMS Portal
  3. Important notice will be prompted, click on “Agree and Continue”
  4. Fill in all the personal, educational, and other details.
  5. Upload the profile photo and click “Save and Continue”
  6. Attach the necessary documents
  7. Submit the application form

Documents Required:

  1. Aadhar Card/ Passport/Voter Id
  2. Birth Certificate/ 10th Marksheet
  3. For the under-25 Age group: College/ University Bonafide Certificate

 

PREVIOUS WINNERS

Panjab University had finished first with 46 total medals that included 17 gold, 19 silver, and 10 bronze medals. Savitribai Phule Pune University, Maharashtra, and Punjab University, Patiala were second and third with 37 and 33 total medals, respectively.

 

WHO ARE THE FRONT-RUNNERS TO TOP THE MEDAL TALLY?

The likes of Panjab University, Punjabi University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, and Mangalore University head into the tournament as the favorites to top the medal tally but would be wary of the threat other universities pose.
