An athlete’s life requires rigorous training on a daily basis, which often takes a toll on their body. In order to reach peak performance, professional athletes train at high intensity and intervals and it varies based on the sport and the requirement. Some professional athletes end up training in 3 to 4 sessions each day, each lasting for at least 1.5 hours. Due to this, they are more prone to injuries and strain in their muscles and joints, which could have a negative impact on their performance. Physiotherapy is a constant companion at times like this, helping athletes improve their mobility and prevent injuries.

Sports physiotherapy is an essential part of an athlete’s everyday rigour. It focuses on examining, diagnosing and treating sports-related injuries and problems. Apart from this, physiotherapy has a slew of advatages athletes could benefit from. Physiotherapy helps them move correctly since they are taught good postures and techniques by their physiotherapists as part of the session.

By providing the correct exercise routines with a focus on the required strain that is to be put on every muscle, physiotherapists also help prevent injuries. Since physiotherapy focuses on strengthening a certain group of muscles at a time, it helps enhance the overall strength of an athlete.

After a long day of rigorous training, an athlete’s muscles crave for relaxation. Exercises like stretching and cooling, done under the guidance of a physiotherapist, can help the muscles relax, helping them prep for the next session.

At The Sports School, we understand the need for this discipline and believe it is important for student-athletes to know about their body, mental health, their diet, and how they can improve their performance on the field.

That is why we have have an integrated Sports Science Center dedicated to holistically improving the skill set of each student, thus helping them realize their optimum. We have a slew of in-house verticals such as sports psychology, physiotherapy, sports nutrition and strength & conditioning. Each of these verticals work in association with each other to ensure that every student-athlete under the Center’s purview is well-rounded in terms of rehabilitation and performance.

The benefits of a dedicated sports science center and mental skills training for athletes

The study of the science of the body and athletic pursuits are combined in sports science. In the run-up to events and competitions, sports science seeks to minimize injury risk while maximizing performance and endurance. It is used to help discover strengths and limitations for everyone, from athletes to the elderly and everyone in between, so that a training program may be created precisely for each person. Many athletes and coaches are interested in sports psychology and mental skills to improve performance. Sport psychology practitioners have adapted and developed a number of mental skills for use in sports.

In general, the aim of these techniques is to change cognitions that will impact behavior and have positive effects on performance and adherence to injury rehabilitation programs. Simply, we can control what we aim for and how we judge success and this can enhance

  1. Goal setting
  2. Positive self-talk and expectations
  3. Relaxing during crucial match moments
  4. Dealing with high pressure
  5. Having a heightened awareness

At our dedicated sports science sessions, we mentor students toward understanding that mental health is just as important as physical health when training for a sport, through continuous tracking of their progress and developing positive interactions around their experience and obstacles.

What are some challenges faced by individuals that can be improved with mental skills training?

There are several situations an individual is put under during match prep, examinations, and competition play and we all experience changing levels of

  1. motivation,
  2. self-confidence, and
  3. anxiety

depending on the situation we’re in whether it is sports or academics. Every individual possesses the ability to be mentally strong and perform consistently, even under the most adverse conditions. The goal of mental skills training at the sports science center here at The Sports School is to prepare individuals to consistently perform at their optimal level for that day.

The programs at The Sports School for upskilling training

The sports science program at TSS is managed by a team of experts with in-house sports psychologists, sports physiotherapists, sports performance nutritionists, strength & conditioning specialists, naturopathy specialists, and yoga therapists who work together to ensure our athletes enhanced performance.

Mr. Rahul has joined as the Senior Physiotherapist at SCS & TSS and heads the program. He is a qualified Sports physiotherapist and has finished his Master in Physiotherapy from Sr NTR university, AP. He has worked with Attitude Prime for a year as a sports physiotherapist under Dr Gladson Johnson’s mentorship (PT). He has also worked as a sports physiotherapist in Peak Performance under the mentorship of Dr Yash Pandey (PT). Mr Rahul has worked as the sports physio for the under 14 AITA National Tennis tournament which was held at Hennur Transform Tennis Academy.

In an effort to produce better performance and enable the overall holistic development of each student-athlete, our specialists identify several factors that the team will work on every 3 months. The integrated sports science center focuses on

  • Ways to deal with stress
  • Manage performance anxiety
  • Handling internal and external pressures

The Sports School athletes have recently shown tremendous improvement with some students winning at the State and National levels consistently.

Recognizing the value of consistent practice is crucial when building a strategy for improving mental toughness in sports. Sports mental skill development is just as important as sports physical skill development. For an athlete to succeed, both are necessary. It might take time to develop mental toughness, just as it does to become physically skilled.

Athletes’ thoughts and emotions can be altered in a way that increases their chances of succeeding in sports. Athletes can deal with a variety of conditions they will face in high-level athletic performance settings, by establishing a program in conjunction with a sports psychologist.

The Sports school is now a Khelo India accredited center for Sports development. The school also provides UG/PG degrees in association with Jain University (Deemed-to-be) for the graduate programs. The mentors for the multiple sports programs at the school include Robin Uthappa, Pullela Gopichand, Rohan Bopanna and are partnered with Bengaluru FC  for enabling the BFC Youth Development program. Bengaluru FC professional career pathways in association with The Sports School

How does Bengaluru FC’s player development program work at The Sports School?

Every young boy and girl who aspires to follow his goals and play professional football has access to a special player development pathway that Bengaluru FC has built with The Sports School. BFC trainers at The Sports School are equipped to create a cutting-edge curriculum using specially designed training methods for all age groups.

The school forms the pyramid’s base in their pathway, teaching pupils all the fundamental abilities required to get into the fully sponsored BFC youth academy. In an effort to support the Bengaluru FC player development, The Sports School in association with BFC has recently appointed Jan Van Loon (Ex-Arsenal coach)  as their Head of Youth Development. Students train and learn at the school, which also provides a residential facility. Top talents can eventually move up to Bengaluru FC residential teams trial camps at Bellary. TSS is one of the best football academies in Bengaluru for individuals aspiring to play in the ISL or become professional footballers.

The Sports School’s Advantage

It’s crucial to make sure that kids who enroll in The Sports School program become accustomed to the game, even if they may be new to it. It is imperative to make sure that they advance to the Elite Team if they are talented and dedicated. The football team receives rigorous technical and tactical training to prepare them for joining the academy teams in Bellary, Karnataka.

  • We place equal value on our coach-to-student ratio (1:10).

On and off the field, we adopt a more holistic approach, and our coaches receive ongoing training so they can instruct the children in the most advanced way, at par with international football standards.

  • Depending on how experienced they are with the sports, children will be trained accordingly.

To put this into perspective, a 12-year-old who has never played football before joining TSS receives a rudimentary introduction to the game and is taught from the basics. Additionally, if a 7-year-old child has been playing already and is talented, he will pick up instructions quickly. The coaches will make this decision based on evaluating various elements of their physical ability.

  • Keeping up with the philosophy of competition, The Sports School makes sure that every child has the chance to participate in competitive games at every level.

The school has now decided to participate in more friendly matches, which will see kids from each center play against one another, following a season of rigorous training. A contest like this will provide the coaches a chance to evaluate their performance, and based on the outcomes, they will be able to plan any necessary development. Every year, TSS offers plenty of competitive match opportunities to all the football students so they are always match-ready.

How the athletes get selected to start their professional careers with BFC

The students here are assessed and tracked on their development while receiving academic support and all the facilities for improvement in one place, which includes strength training, yoga therapy, physiotherapy, rehab, and nutrition. Our academic curriculum is built around the athlete’s tournament calendar providing balance to their routines. Additionally, the school also supports the students with remedial yoga sessions and readily available physio experts to repair and rejuvenate to be always match-ready. The school boasts a 30-acre sporting ecosystem with FIFA quality pro certified artificial turfs that go through stringent testing criteria, including both laboratories and on the field tests of the FIFA quality program ensuring best of facilities are provided for the student athletes.

The Bengaluru FC academy managers scouts the players every year in December to pick the most talented players to move into the Bellary academy where they will get the opportunity to start a professional career in Football and this is why The Sports School is one of the best Football coaching centers in Bengaluru. Learn more about the specifics of the program in detail, or to apply to join our 30-acre residential sporting ecosystem, head over to our website.

Sport science integrates the study of science with athletic endeavors. The goal of sport science is to reduce injury risk while maximizing performance and endurance in the lead-up to events and competitions.

For everyone from athletes to the elderly and everyone in between, it is used to assist identify strengths and weaknesses so that a training Programme can be tailored specifically for each person.

Sports scientists have derived data to ensure that athletes are using the most recent preparatory methods, testing, and training regimens.

Our highly qualified sport scientists can provide players evidence-based therapies to boost performance.

  • Sport specific testing
  • Movement screenings
  • Injury prevention and corrective exercise prescription
  • Program design and monitoring

“Sport Science is a multi-disciplinary field concerned with the understanding and enhancement of human performance. It includes the knowledge, methods and applications of sub-disciplines of human movement studies (i.e., exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control and motor development, exercise and sport psychology), as well as how they interact.

Sports scientists are trained experts who assist sports people to achieve the best possible sporting performance. They evaluate, research, assess and advise on coaching, training, competition and recovery practices in all areas and levels of sport.

A sports scientist will work with teams and individual athletes to provide scientific support in preparation for competition. This can involve information, technical and practical support on training, injury prevention, technique analysis, nutrition and optimization of performance, and assistance with psychological issues (such as motivation, stress and arousal, and coping strategies). For example, a sport scientist might design a training Programme to increase a cyclist’s speed or improve a swimmer’s power off the swimming blocks.”

Sports science is the study of key sciences

Psychology

The psychological demands of physical activity can determine if an individual is able to achieve success and optimal performance. Taking psychological factors into account can affect performance.

Physiology

Physiology takes into account the way that the human body functions when exposed to exercise and physical training.

Biometrics

Biometrics is the science of measuring and studying biological data which includes hormone and glucose levels. People who keep an eye on this data are able to improve their health and energy.

Motor Control/Learning

Motor control/ learning is the way that a human is able to organize their motor skills. By gaining motor control people are able to move accurately and swiftly while minimizing energy use and avoiding injury.

Sports Science Helping to Prevent Injuries

Stretching

Your muscles need to be stretched before and after a workout to help prevent injuries. To be effective stretching needs to be done correctly. Ineffective stretching can actually cause damage and not be adequate for your workout.

Warming Up and Cooling Down

Warming up prepares your body for exercise and physical training. A warm-up loosens your joints and muscles while slowly increasing your heart rate. Cooling down is just as important. It brings your heart rate down slowly.

Build Your Workout Gradually

Prevent injuries by starting slowly and gradually build duration and intensity. Having VO2 Max and threshold testing performed will help you determine and implement your training levels.

Proper Nutrition

Nutrition is necessary for a successful workout. Our consultants can talk to you about the proper nutrition for your workout, your goals and your physiology.

Sufficient Recovery

Recovery is crucial in preventing injury. Insufficient recovery can lead to weakened performance and injury. Talk to one of our exercise physiologists about recovery for your individual needs.

Psychological Recovery

Psychological recovery techniques such as massage, spas and hot showers can help your mental health. Mental health plays a big role in recovery and it’s important to ensure you’re feeling great about your workouts, not dreading them as this can lead to fatigue and injury.

Pay Attention to Your Body

The “no pain, no gain” theory is incorrect. Always listen to your body. If you are feeling pain you could be causing avoidable damage. When beginning a new workout routine, it is normal to feel mild discomfort, so it is important to know what is normal pain and what is not.

Swimming is perhaps one of the biggest and most beloved of all the Olympics sports, with a long and colorful history. The act of swimming is beautiful and effortless and often makes your jaw drop – but have you ever wondered about what swimming was like when it was first considered a sport? How it has evolved into the cut-throat competition we witness today? Keep reading to find out!

Stone Age origins

Although humans have likely been swimming ever since the stone age, however, it didn’t emerge as a popular sport or past time until the early 19th century.

The first artistic depiction of swimming

According to britannica.com, archaeological evidence has shown the first known record of people swimming dates back to Egyptian drawings from 2500 BCE with stone-age paintings in the cave of swimmers dating back even further. Ancient Greeks and Romans later used this practice to train soldiers for war and it eventually became “part of men’s primary education.”

Ancient Pacific Islanders are believed to have taught their children to swim at the same time or even before walking.

From Leisure to Competition

Although swimming began as a recreational activity, even before the first Olympic Games in 1896, over the years it evolved into a competitive sport.

In the early days of the sport, swimmers experimented by trial and error and watched others. And breaststroke was the only stroke swum.

In 1846 Australia hosted the first swimming championship. These were many of the first opportunities for different national teams to compete. Over the years that followed, different countries held their own events; India got their chance in the 1920s.

Birth of Olympic swimming

The sport made its debut at the Olympic Games in 1896. It is one of the only four sports to have been retained, appearing in every summer Olympics ever since.

Olympic Games Swimming

At the first Olympics, there were only four swimming events, three of which were freestyle. At the second Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, three unusual swimming events took place. One was the obstacle course. The other was a durability test in underwater swimming. The third was a 4,000m event, the longest swimming event ever. None of the three was used again at the Olympics.

Women make splash

Citing several reasons, women were excluded from swimming in the first several Olympic Games. It was not until the 1912 Stockholm Olympics that women were able to compete, and even when they were finally allowed to compete, they were only given two events to participate in 100m Freestyle and 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay.

The development of techniques, equipment

The sport’s popularity began to grow, professional organizations were formed (FINA in London), and spectators turned up to see the world’s fastest swimmers. And inevitably, things soon became competitive. During the 1930s, the Japanese took pictures of world-class swimmers, studied them, and used the research to form a swimming team that dominated the 1932 Olympics. This was the beginning of research into stroke mechanics, indicating the future success of competitive swimming.

The post-WWII era was a busy time for innovation with the overall economic growth of the war has brought major technological advancements and innovations that have influenced the world of swimming in the form of lane lines and indoor competition pools.

Advanced training techniques and equipment, such as hydrodynamic swimwear and a better drainage system in the pool, allowed athletes to swim much faster than before. By the end of 1930, marked lane and pool depth guidelines had leveled the playing field and allowed for fairer competition.

During the period, major swimming strokes used were the sidestroke and the breaststroke. Later, changes to the number of events in terms of strokes and how to use it in competition, distances and programs have changed significantly over the years.

The 50s – the rise of modern strokes and the pioneers of Indian swimming

In the 1950s and 1960s, the world of swimming advanced with the introduction of new swimming strokes, and new events debuted in the years that followed, placing much attention on speed and endurance records.

Butterfly stroke was first held at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics along with flip turn movement to change direction when a swimmer gets to the end of the lane.

In the same year, 1956, India got its first swimmer representing the country. Shamsher Khan became the first Indian to achieve the feat in after he set a national record in the 200-meter butterfly event in 1954.

Another pioneering figure in the Indian swimming scene was Arti Saha, who became the first Asian woman to swim http://www.gulfportpharmacy.com/xanax.html across the English Channel. Arti was also the first Indian female athlete to be conferred with the Padma Shri Award in 1960.

The rise goggles and swimming caps

As the sport of swimming grew, many swimmers and coaches began experimenting with new techniques. Swimwear become more hydrodynamic in the 19560s, and goggles and caps were invented during the early 1970s. Even though it took a while for swimmers to get used to the accustom, as time progressed, it has risen like magma through the cracks of time.

Nowadays most swimmers now wear caps to improve their speed and goggles to keep water out of their eyes and help them see where the swimmer is going. In the 1976 Olympics, swimmers were officially allowed to wear goggles, and the rest is history as the sport continues to build and add pieces to its storied history.

The modern era and the current sad state of affairs

The diverse yet intense sport has seen unbelievable growth over the past decades but the growth has sped up exponentially as of late, boasting millions of enthusiastic fans and followers across the world. Though swimming as a sport in India carries limited importance, what is largely unacknowledged is the sport being embraced amongst Indians like never before.

Although many rules and things have changed, swimming remains one of the most established and beloved Olympic sports in history. Swimming is the third most-watched sport in the Olympic Games today; earning eight-day moments in the quadrennial event spotlight including the preliminary, semi-final, and final heats with genuine international massive appeal. It is also one of the sports that offer the most number of medals in any multi-sport event.

Despite the global appeal, and being more popular than football and basketball at the Olympics, one might be able to see that professional swimming isn’t nearly as glamorous and lucrative as it should be. Coupled with professional swimmers’ struggle to earn a living wage while competing and not being able to afford the luxury of being full-time athletes is a sad state of affairs with a few exceptions across the world. Only time will be able to tell if consumers are ever going to be able to stomach the sport of swimming for more than one week every four years. Whatever the case, the way we consume swimming in the come decades may be on the cusp of great change.
