CBSE or PUC? Which is Better?

CBSE or PUC? Which is Better?

If you are a student who has just completed Class 10th or a parent, especially in Karnataka, it’s given that you’ve been or are going to pass through this dilemma where you must pick one between CBSE and PUC. For the longest time, we have heard how ‘crucial’ these two years are, and how our judgment today will mold our future. Hence, there is additional pressure while selecting a suitable board for Grade 11th and 12th.

The question isn’t which board is superior; the question is – which board will serve your purpose? There are several different opinions floating out there about how one exceeds the other – it can be in terms of subjects, combinations available, depth of their prescribed syllabus, etc. Still, the first step towards this process is understanding what will work best for us more than anything else. Let’s look at the two in a little more detail:

CBSE – Central Board of Secondary Education is a national level board of education controlled by the Union Government of India. This board revises its syllabus with the required changes to benefit students and conducts board exams for 10th and 12th standard students.

PUC – Pre-University Course is an intermediate course conducted by the state education board in India. It is a substitute for 11th and 12th standards under national-level boards. Every state has a different syllabus and exam pattern.

How do you know which one will work for you? Make an informed decision, list down your interests, and final goals, instead of resorting to what parents or friends select.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) prescribes curriculum and textbooks designed by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT). The state boards have a curriculum designed for the schools by the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT). The curriculum of both CBSE and the state boards several have commonalities and differences.

Particulars

CBSE

PUC

Syllabus Different curriculum than State Boards and differs in the level of difficulty as well. The state board’s syllabus for the subjects is not widely different from that of the CBSE.
Learning CBSE syllabus offers education in a more scientific method. State syllabus gives more importance to the practical implications of related subjects. State Boards syllabus in many states is much similar to CBSE & in some states, it’s more advanced than CBSE
Mode of Instruction Mode of instruction followed in CBSE schools is English and Hindi State board schools it is primarily English and then the regional languages

Note: Both CBSE or State Board certificates are valid for further studies in India or Abroad.

Marking system CBSE exams are tougher hence the chance to score depreciates. The evaluation of CBSE board exams also is strict. In-State Board examinations, the respective state authorities control the evaluation which lets the student score better.
Other Activities Flexibility for students to participate in extracurricular activities or sports tournaments is nearly identical in both CBSE & State Board. It depends on the respective institution’s intent to mold the academic structure in a way that it not only accommodates but also helps the students to improve their skills.

Choosing the right board can definitely be extremely important for your child, in the long run. However, it does not mean that that is the only thing that matters in the development of your child. Students’ career and future entirely depend on their hard work, school, teachers, and parents. It doesn’t really matter if they are on the state board or CBSE if they dedicatedly put in the work to achieve their goals.
